About the PTATC
|
Each year, thousands of children are diagnosed with cancer, severely affecting what many of us take for granted - the ability to have a healthy childhood. The mission of the PTATC is to host an annual mixed doubles tennis tournament to raise funds that primarily support research to lessen the suffering caused by childhood cancer. It has become one of the largest charitable non-celebrity tennis tournaments, benefiting the cancer research program at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. Ron and Maryanne Peterson created the Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic in 1986 when their 12 year old daughter Julianne was diagnosed with Leukemia. 25 years later, the PTATC now hosts more than 110 of the area's top men and women tennis players and has raised over $3.8 million for children's cancer research. Cancer Research and Supported Programs Each year, more than 10,000 children and adolescents in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer. When cancer or a blood disorder affects a child or teen in Minnesota, most often they are cared for at Children’s — the Upper Midwest’s largest pediatric hematology/oncology program. At Children’s, we deliver treatment outcomes that consistently rank us as one of the top ten programs in the U.S. Our vision is to continually improve our care through the use of cuttingedge technologies, aggressive enrollment of patients in clinical trials, and a concentrated focus on managing symptoms and pain. The PTATC raises money to fund research that is saving lives all over the world. Doctors and researchers prepare materials for scientific meeting presentations and publishes many peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.
